We recently caught up with Mosaic member NEWDO, the Northeastern Wisconsin Dance Organization, and learned more about their wonderful organization!
What is the mission of NEWDO?
The mission of NEWDO is to promote professional-level works of classical dance for the community of Northeastern Wisconsin. NEWDO produces the annual Green Bay Nutcracker Ballet at the Meyer Theatre, the annual community Spring Ballet, and the local Emerging Choreographers’ Showcase.
We are so excited about the wonderful community partnerships you have built, can you tell us more about them?
NEWDO provides opportunities for performers of all ages and abilities to perform on stage in high level productions. We bring back dancers originally from the Green Bay area who have gone on to work professionally in their field and our productions use dancers from studios all over the community. We provide a Summer Intensive and a Young Choreographers Showcase for dancers from many different studios, bringing together like-minded peers. Currently we are partnering with the Civic Symphony of Green Bay to provide outreach to the Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay and the Kroc Center for ‘Dance of the Hours’ which will take place in February 2016. And in April of next year, the Boys and Girls Club and Aldo Leopold Community School will share the stage with local studio dancers.
Your organization has such an important impact, can you explain how you engage with the community?
We provide the experience of professional level dance. Besides our outreach with Aldo Leopold, Boys and Girls Club, and the Kroc, we also provide tickets to our events to Families of Children with Cancer, the Girl Scouts, and Oneida Nation. We perform a special community Nutcracker show for these groups in order to reach as many audience members as possible, to provide the magic and artistry of dance to as many of our neighbors as we can. This year, we’ve also extended our community show to ambulatory nursing homes!
NEWDO continues to grow as a dance organization, can you tell us about any future goals?
We plan to develop and promote our Young Choreographers Showcase, grow our local Summer Intensive, provide scholarships for dancers to pursue further study, and to continue to partner with local arts nonprofits because we believe we are all stronger together!
We believe everyone should have bragging rights, can you tell us about something you are especially proud of?
We had a successful first year bringing in professional dancers from Carolina Ballet to teach our Summer Intensive to a group of very talented young dancers. We are also very proud of the money raised through Indiegogo to partner with the Civic Symphony to perform a concert with them in February 2016.
Our readers love interesting facts, can you give us one about NEWDO?
Our Sugar Plum Fairy is a HUGE Packer fan! Every Sunday matinee, she takes her final bow decked out in Packer gear. Of course, the crowd goes wild!
One last thing, are there any shows coming up that we should know about?
