It’s art fair season for a lot of artists and it’s no different for Mosaic member artist, Brent Crabb. We thought we would catch up with him during the madness and see what’s on the horizon for him!

When did you decide that you wanted to be an artist?

Pencil drawing has always been a passion of mine. As a child I took to drawing instinctively and thrived on the mentoring that my uncle, who is also an artist, gave to me.

Your pencil drawings are so intricate! Can you tell us a little about your background and training?

After high school, I studied Commercial Art and Technical Drafting Design. There were a few sidetracks, but art was always prevalent. I have done illustration and logo work, renderings for developers and real-estate companies, numerous commission drawings and even threw in a few custom motorcycle paint jobs. My favorite throughout this pursuit was working as a monument layout artist.

Wow! What an interesting variety of projects you’ve worked on! Walk us through your artistic process – materials, style, how long a piece takes to complete…

I use pencils ranging from 9H to 9B to build texture and depth. Blending & erasing creates dark and light values to add softness and dimension. Some of my detailed drawings can take a couple hundred hours… it depends on the size and the subject matter. It takes patience. My style has changed throughout the years; it has gotten more detailed.

So what is your favorite subject matter to draw?

My favorite pieces are my personal drawings of my cats as they assist me daily on my drawing table!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I love to ride motorcycles and walk the downtown neighborhoods with a good cup of coffee from a local coffee shop.
